How the first bitcoin was made

On 3 January 2009 Satoshi Nakamoto mined block 0 — the genesis block — and wrote a newspaper headline into it.

Three things to take away
1The genesis block carried the text "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor brings banks back from the brink", a timestamp and a statement of intent.
2Its 50 BTC reward is unspendable by design: the block was not added to the database the way later blocks are.
3The first real transaction came nine days later — 10 BTC from Satoshi to Hal Finney.
